The Unexpected Hair Trend Celebs are Getting Right Now

In middle school, I chopped my long hair into a bob in an effort to look like Selena Gomez at the time. Reader, it was not a good look. However, I was determined to resemble my favorite celebrity even though I didn’t take into account my pubescent features. In 2023 people are doing the same, swapping long strands for a chic bob following suit of their favorite stars.

The bob’s surge in popularity is a culmination of a few things in addition to the star power behind it. “Hairstyles that require having really good haircuts are quite popular again,” says celebrity hairstylist and Colorproof ambassador David Cruz. “The bob definitely fits in that category.” (He advises using Smooth Drops for chic, sleek bob.)

Additionally, celebrity colorist Marley Xavier says there’s something empowering about someone wanting a drastic change. “Cutting your hair into a bob is a great way to do that, especially if your hair has been damaged or is looking a little tired,” says Xavier. “Bobs are timeless, can be extremely versatile, chic, edgy, playful, you name it. They most definitely have that ‘it’ factor.” Hair artist Venner James agrees that the shorter, sharper cut is more attention-grabbing and daring. It’s a timeless, elegant look. It’s even been the signature look for trendsetter Anna Wintour for decades, notes celebrity hairstylist Dimitris Giannetos.

“The bob is easy to maintain and is very versatile. You can rock it in your natural curls or waves and even straighten it out,” says James. “A layered bob will make thin hair look thicker and also give an instant facelift. It’s a hairstyle that serves you well.” We’ve rounded up your favorite stars with bobs for a bit of inspiration.

Hailey Bieber

“Most recently, we’ve all been hearing about Hailey Bieber and her big chop,” says hairstylist and Authentic Beauty Concept advocate Justin Toves-Vincilione. “She had her hair cut into a chin-length bob with whispers of face-framing and very light texture near the ends.” He notes that while her hair color has pretty much remained in the same family of shades, “she has a massively different cut.” Xavier notes that over the past couple of years, Bieber has become quite the trendsetter. We won’t be surprised if whatever her next cut is starts trending as well.

Zendaya

Zendaya is often shape-shifting and trying new things. She “came right into 2023 with a shoulder-length, straight voluminous bob,” says Toves-Vincilione. “She has even ventured out into a color we’re not used to seeing her in—blonde.”

Jenna Ortega

Xavier points out that Jenna Ortega recently gave her hair a chop. James describes her new look as a “shaggy wolf cut bob sitting just above her shoulders.”

Lizzo

“Lizzo loves to play around with her look, whether it’s loose mermaid waves, big bouncy curls or even voluminous plumed out natural texture,” says Toves-Vincilione noting that it’s usually kept on the longer side. “Lately, you can find Lizzo stepping into her short hair era and having fun with different textures and colors.”

Kelly Rowland

James says Kelly Rowland’s chin-length middle part bob by Kahh Spence “has had social media in a chokehold.” Everything about the cut is stunning. “It’s the color, the precession, the way it frames her face and shows her neckline. It’s just perfect.”

James notes that H.E.R. traded her long luscious hair for a bob recently. He says she’s currently “rocking her curly fro bob with full bangs.”
