The First FDA-Cleared At-Home Laser Is Here

New to the U.S. market, but not new to the world, the LYMA laser ($2695) is the first FDA-cleared device that has been approved for at-home use. When you think of the LED, microcurrent, contour and toning facial devices that we currently have on the market, they certainly have their place, but you can’t really call them laser-like, making the LYMA a first-of-its-kind tool.

LYMA founder Lucy Goff explains that its not your average at-home technology and the idea is to get an experience that is closer to in-office treatments than it is to any other tool on the market. “There’s never been anything in this category of power that’s ever been available for at-home use,” explains Goff, who took years to develop the tool. “The normal at-home devices are around five milliwatts. This is 500 milliwatts. To put it in perspective, this is 100 times more powerful than LED.”

What It Does

Developed based on research by LYMA’s director of science Dr. Paul Clayton, Geoff says the concept for the laser came from the treatment of a 62-year-old man’s knees that had been treated with low level laser therapy to rebuild cartilage. “There was a whole team of doctors in the room looking at the cartilage content and how it was rectifying itself and regenerating, and he thought, ‘Well forget what’s going on inside the knee, the skin on the knee looked about 20 years younger than the skin on the other knee.’ This is when Dr. Clayton realized the home cosmetic device market was heavily focused on LED light, so scientists began to look for an alternative light source that was safe to use.”

The low level light, when used consistently, can treat all of the common signs of aging like skin elasticity, texture, tone, pigment concerns and lines and wrinkles. “When you use a typical at-home light device it cannot reach the base layer of the skin where the fibroblasts are, where your skin is rebuilt. This is the first device where the light will reach the base layer of the skin with sufficient power to actually transform it,” Goff explains. 

Who It’s For

The laser works on all skin types and skin tones explains Goff and the low level thermal energy doesn’t negatively affect the skin in any way. “Darker skin tones and melanin-rich skin contain more pigment, which when used with traditional laser treatments, can cause burning and scar more easily. However the LYMA Laser doesn’t damage skin, instead it helps skin regenerate naturally, is completely painless and has no post-treatment discomfort or redness.”

How to Use It

Using the LYMA Priming Serum or your favorite anti-aging serum or face oil as a conductor, glide the lightweight device across your face for 30 minutes a day for 12 weeks. Goff says consistency is key and once the three-month period ends, continue use for 30 minutes once a week to maintain results.
