The Best Mother-Daughter Beauty Advice We’ve Heard From Celebrities

We’ve talked to many celebrities over the years, and for many stars, their love of beauty is a family affair. Many celebrities’ philosophies of beauty and skin care were largely formed by their mothers, and they then pass it on to their children. We’ve gathered some of the best pieces of advice and product recommendations between celebrity mother-daughter duos—and even some grandmothers—we’ve heard during interviews.

Catharine Zeta-Jones

“I’ve always, always sworn by Elizabeth Arden’s 8-Hour Cream ($25). My grandmother used to use it as the answer to literally everything,” Catherine Zeta-Jones said. “When I gashed my shins as a child, it was time for some 8-Hour Cream.”

She also shared that she still uses the Mason Pearson hairbrush her mother gave her for Christmas as a child. She said she’s tried many other brushes, but nothing compares.

Cindy Crawford

Cindy Crawford said her mother never wore makeup and washed her face with soap and water, so she didn’t know much about beauty products growing up. However, she and her daughter Kaia Gerber are up to date on the latest trends. 

Crawford said Gerber uses the ReFa ($280). “I liked it, so I ordered one, and it usually sits on my desk. Sometimes I use it in between calls to give me a little boost, but it’s also great before a shoot—for those early call times when I have to wake up before my face does!” said Crawford of the tool.

Venus Williams

The tennis pro said her first beauty memory was using her mom’s lipstick. “She loves red lipstick,” Venus Williams said of her mom. Her mother also taught her the importance of moisturizing. “She used to do it so much that we would always tease her about it, but now we see that it really does work. Now, I moisturize like crazy, too,” said Williams.

Debi Mazar

Debi Mazar’s beauty inspiration trickles down from a generation beyond her mother. She said her earliest beauty memories come from her grandmother Evelyn. She “was so feminine. She was very beautiful, wore My Sin perfume by Lanvin, stockings with garter belts, slips, heels, and satin bed jackets,” said Mazar. “I would watch her do her hair and makeup every day, and she was always dressed to the nines.”

Kristen Bell

During the days of lockdown and virtual school, Kristen Bell’s daughters became interested in temporary hair dye. “My daughters have been changing their hair color weekly. Today, they were so excited to go red,” said Bell.

“During one of their 15-minute school breaks, we washed their hair, towel-dried it, put the hair color in, went back to school for a half-hour, had another 15-minute break, rinsed it out, and they finished their day with red hair,” the star said. The brand they use is Maria Nila which has a handful of colors that wash out in a week.

Batsheva and Miriam Haart

The stars of My Unorthodox Life shared some of the beauty lessons they’ve learned from their glamorous mother, Julia Haart. Batsheva Haart said her mother “always carries lip balm around to have nice, soft lips.” Miriam Haart said her mom often uses liquid blushes “and those I really like so that I adopted for my mom and I use it all the time.”

Jordana Brewster

Jordana Brewster grew up with a mother that was a successful model, so she was always around beauty and makeup. “We would have a whole routine three hours before a party where we would put rollers in our hair, do a mask and put on makeup,” said Brewster. “It was a ritual, and it was really fun.”

Molly Sims

“I’m a big proponent, through my mother, of self-care and taking care of my skin,” said Molly Sims. “I enjoy it. I love products. I love feeling good.”

Betsey Johnson

The fashion designer keeps her skin-care routine super minimal with just a few essential products. She uses an Olay moisturizer because it reminds her of growing up. “My mother used it, and I’m just a big fan of the brand,” she said.
