The Aesthetic Procedures Women in Their 40s are Requesting Most

Women in their 40s have much more access to information than their mothers did. We also have more anti-aging options readily available, which is making the 40 the new 30 and sometimes even the new late 20s. To find out which procedures are keeping us looking younger than we did in our old throwback snaps, we asked top surgeons which treatments are trending most amongst this Dorian Gray generation.

Wrinkle Relaxers and Volumizing Fillers

Injectables like neurotoxin and fillers take the top spot, says New York plastic surgeon Roman Rayham, MD. While wrinkle relaxers like Botox Cosmetic, Xeomin, Dysport and Jeuveau freeze muscle movement to reduce lines around the forehead and the eyes, fillers like Juvéderm, Restylane and RHA do their thing to restore lost volume and give the face back its youthful plumpness. “The ratio of the relatively significant improvement in the facial appearance to the easiness and quickness of the procedure itself and minimal downtime makes it highly attractive to people who want to get fast, visible results and don’t have much time for post-procedure downtime,” he explains.

Skin Tighteners

Arcadia, CA, plastic surgeon Art Yu, MD says in addition to injectables, his patients are in seek of a collagen boost to help counteract the effects of aging. “As we all know, after reaching 40 years of age, almost everyone starts to experience loss of collagen and begins to develop statis and dynamic wrinkles. As a result, most people will start to seek collagen-boosting treatments like Ultherapy and Thermage. Multi-needle radio-frequency treatments has almost negligible pain during the procedure and delivers even better results. In my opinion, these modalities will become more popular in the next few years.  

A new skin tightener, Sofwave is also trending, adds New York facial plastic surgeon Lee Ann M. Klausner, MD. “It’s faster and more efficient than traditional forms of ultrasound treatment and it’s noninvasive so you can return to your regular activities immediately afterwards. It also offers flexibility to be customized to suit the patient and safely combined with other noninvasive or minimally invasive treatments to yield optimal results.”

Eye Rejuvenation Surgery

According to Dr. Klausner, many women in their mid- to late forties begin considering eyelid surgery depending on their stage of aging and anatomy. Dr. Yu adds, “Upper and lower blepharoplasty is popular in this age group,  along with fat grafting to supplement the lost fat and collagen contents.”

Facelifting Procedures

Whether via surgical means or via injectable technique, the 40-year-old face does benefit from some minor lifting. “I think people are no longer waiting until they are 70 or 80 years old to get a facelift and I think with such a quick recovery, not taking narcotics after surgery and being able to get right back into your busy lifestyle, there’s a lot of appeal for a mini facelift,” explains Chicago plastic surgeon Sam Speron, MD. “A mini facelift takes about 30 minutes under local anesthesia and many doctors, like myself, can do it in-office.”

Wayne, NJ facial plastic surgeon Jeffrey B. Wise, MD adds that in additional to surgical lifts, his patients see dramatic improvement through injectable “liquid facelifts” as well. “This treatment entails a combination of injectables, such as Botox and dermal fillers, customized to reduce signs of sagging and wrinkles, and strategically adding volume to enhance the patient’s existing features and ‘turn back the clock.’ This highly versatile treatment is fantastic because it can not only soften wrinkles and lines, but also reduce hollow, sunken-in under-eyes, smooth out the forehead, plump up the lips, give eyebrows a subtle lift, diminish nasolabial folds, fill in cheeks and other areas with lost volume, reduce the look of jowling, and contour the face.”

Body Contouring

“Due to the pandemic, we are seeing more and more consults for body-contouring procedures,” explains Newton Centre, MA plastic surgeon Joseph Russo, MD. “Patients are wanting treatments that keep them looking young with minimal downtime and great results, including contouring with liposuction, and BodyTite and CoolSculpting to reduce stubborn fat in target areas and sculpt their bodies.”
