Supermodel Kara Del Toro Shares the DIY Hair-Color Mishap That Left Her Looking Like a “Walking Hot Topic”

During her modeling days, Kara Del Toro worked with brands like YSL, Guerlain, Victoria’s Secret, Revolve, Neutrogena, Olay, L’Oreal, Lorac, Kerastase, Lancome, Skims, Pat McGrath, Sunday Riley, and Barneys NYC. This spring, she’s transitioning into acting via Paramount Pictures’ “At Midnight,” and she couldn’t be happier. “I have to step back and realize that I am not being scrutinized for my appearance the way I used to be,” the multi-hyphen shared in-between talking holy grails, at-home beauty snafus and spring vacation plans. “And that’s such a relief.”

The curse of modeling is that it has you hyper fixated on your appearance, so letting that go and focusing on getting into character can be a little bit of a challenge—but it’s also my favorite part. Sometimes, I do an audition and watch the tape back and think, “I don’t like the way I look from this angle or when I do this….” I have to step back and realize that I am not being scrutinized for my appearance the way I used to be—and that’s such a relief.

On memorable modeling moments:

For one of my first beauty campaigns in LA they told me they were going to dye my hair dark brown. When I left the job, my hair was pitch black with a red undertone. I ran home and looked up a DIY remedy to remove hair color, which was not a good idea! It said to put lemon juice and baking soda all-over your head for a few hours. Well, it removed a lot of the color, but left my hair red at the roots and black on the tips; I looked like a walking Hot Topic! It took 16 hours and a lot of money to fix it without my hair falling out!

On all-time holy-grail beauty items:

Urban Decay Naked 2 Lip Liner ($25), Bali Body tanning mousse ($30), got2be glued spiking gel ($6)—I use it for my brows—and Crest Whitestrips ($38).

On her simple skin-care routine:

I believe in simplicity when it comes to skin care. I got a facial once at a very well-known celebrity facialist…mid-facial, she started freaking out, and I knew something went wrong. Apparently, she had her machine settings up to high and I left with my entire face swollen and bruised. I stick to cleansing my skin every night, no matter what, and use tons of face oil. I also love an at-home microcurrent like the NuFace or SolaWave. I see a big difference when I do that daily.

On spring:

I’m so excited about the super bloom in LA. We’ve had so much rain; I know it’s going to be stunning. I’m also really excited about planning spring and summer travels—I am hoping to go to Bora Bora this year!
