Kate Hudson was recently spotted wearing braided pigtails to a star-studded affair and suddenly, we're reconsidering the childhood favorite hairstyle. For many of us, pigtails were left on the playground after middle school, but the actor proves how easily they can be elevated for an adult night on the town with just a few tweaks.

On December 13, Hudson attended the store opening of new ready-to-wear line Favorite Daughter with her hair loosely braided and covered by a cream-colored, wide-brim fedora. While pigtails braided too tightly can read severe or childlike, her decision to keep them chunky and disheveled gave a more relaxed effect. Paired with an oversized cable knit sweater, straight-leg jeans, and a long black coat, Hudson's braids looked polished and effortlessly chic.

The actor isn't the first to sport a braided look like this in recent months. K-pop star Lisa showed off a Rapunzel-like version to tease her upcoming solo debut. Dyed silver and ending just at the thigh, the braids got a playful twist with the addition of sleek, wispy bangs. Other stars who've also shown the look some love? Lizzo, who recently accessorized her pigtails with the cutest butterfly clips, and Miley Cyrus, who gathered her mullet up before hitting the stage for Lollapalooza '21.

If you were looking for a simple hairstyle that can be worn for pretty much any occasion, braided pigtails might be the answer. With a flattering part, the versatile braids can be left down like Hudson's or pinned into a sculptural updo.

The best part (no pun intended) is that getting this look at home couldn't be easier. To make sure your braids are even on both sides, you'll want to place your finger on the tip of your nose before you part down the middle. "When you use your comb, part to the specific point that is designated by your finger," hairstylist Matt Fugate previously told Allure. "If you part to your finger, you usually draw a cleaner line than just mindlessly trying to draw a straight line." All that's left to do after that is to braid everything up and you're ready to go.
